Set on a 1930s ocean liner, Stoppard’s hilarious comedy tells the story of a musical-comedy writing team, (Sandor Turai and Alex Gal) and their young, speech-impaired composer (Adam Adam). They are on deadline to complete a new work during their four-day Atlantic crossing. In love with one of the accompanying actresses (Natasha Navratilova), Adam (and writing team) overhears an obvious infidelity between Natasha and another actor, Ivor, who declares his love for her. Sending Gal to comfort the stuttering Adam, Turai hatches a plan to convince Adam that what they actually overheard was Ivor’s pathetic attempt at acting out his own ending to the play. In the end, it is up to the creativity of the playwrights to meet their deadline, transforming betrayal and reality’s confusion into a clever and side-splitting conclusion.
