The Providence Players close out their 20th-anniversary season at the James Lee Community Center in Falls Church with Neil Simon’s comedy confection California Suite, featuring four separate playlets with one common thread. Four couples from different cities travel to California over the course of a year and stay in the same Beverly Hills Hotel suite, bringing their problems, anxieties and comic marital dilemmas with them. Hannah is from New York and has come to take back her daughter who ran away from her to stay with her father. Then there’s Marvin, who’s in town for his nephew’s bar mitzvah, but his brother takes him out for a little carousing, and when he wakes he finds a hooker passed out next to him, and his wife on her way to his room. Another pairing is a British actress, who’s nominated for an Academy Award and is in town for the event with her husband. And finally, two couples at the end of a long-shared vacation are ready to kill each other. Simon is at his most humane and compassionate, and the banter flies fast and furious in this popular comedy. The New York Times said, “Mr. Simon is writing at his ebullient best … [He] makes us laugh so effortlessly.”
